{"id":"AZL-44934","summary":"CVE-2021-42717 affecting package mod_security for versions less than 2.9.7-8","details":"ModSecurity 3.x through 3.0.5 mishandles excessively nested JSON objects. Crafted JSON objects with nesting tens-of-thousands deep could result in the web server being unable to service legitimate requests. Even a moderately large (e.g., 300KB) HTTP request can occupy one of the limited NGINX worker processes for minutes and consume almost all of the available CPU on the machine. Modsecurity 2 is similarly vulnerable: the affected versions include 2.8.0 through 2.9.4.","modified":"2026-04-01T05:16:46.838117Z","published":"2021-12-07T22:15:06Z","upstream":["CVE-2021-42717"],"references":[{"type":"WEB","url":"https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2021-42717"}],"affected":[{"package":{"name":"mod_security","ecosystem":"Azure Linux:3","purl":"pkg:rpm/azure-linux/mod_security"},"ranges":[{"type":"ECOSYSTEM","events":[{"introduced":"0"},{"fixed":"2.9.7-8"}]}],"database_specific":{"source":"https://github.com/microsoft/AzureLinuxVulnerabilityData/blob/main/osv/AZL-44934.json"}}],"schema_version":"1.7.5","severity":[{"type":"CVSS_V3","score":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H"}]}
